Last week, the Marquette County Health Department received a complaint about a kennel with over sixty dogs living in inhumane conditions. When an inspector with the department went to the kennel, the dogs were found to have “inadequate shelter, frozen water dishes and some with coats so matted they struggled to walk and eat,” (as reported by The Northwestern.)

Cary Riehle, the breeder, agreed to relinquish all the dogs rather than bring the facility up to county standards. The surrendered dogs included: “38 beagles, three mixed breeds and 23 designer breeds including golden doodles, Pomeranian poodles, bichon frises, spaniels and yorkie poos.” Shelters estimate that the cost to get all the dogs spayed or neutered, groomed and a dental cleaning will cost over $12,000.

Two Wisconsin shelters have taken the dogs into their care:

-Oshkosh Area Humane Society: www.oahs.org

Green Lake Area Animal Shelter is still seeking homes for the rescued Beagles; information about the dogs and how to adopt them can be found on their website.

Quick Update as of Friday:
All dogs sent to the Oshkosh Humane Society have applications out on them but not necessarily approved applications.
Several beagles and four mixed breed dogs have been adopted from the Green Lake Area Animal Shelter. (Still beagles and beagle mixes available! and the shelter still over max-capicity)

Note: 2 adopted beagles from the shelter have run from their new homes and are lost! They may have run from fear of the new situation after living in a mill for a long time. They are more likely to come to another dog than a human if they are spotted.
