Truth about the Pet Trade

Bark Heard Round the World

May 13, 2008 : 12:05 PM
Puppy Mill Event—this weekend!

After years of work, tireless education, and countless publicized rescues from commercial kennels, the puppy mill/pet trade issue is out there, getting closer and closer to mainstream. Change is near, we can feel it! Now what’s needed is a singular statement, loud and clear, sent out to the world that puppy mills are wrong… hence this Saturday’s puppy mill event: The Bark Heard Round the World.

The event is sponsored by www.puppymillrescue.com and the Beverly Animal Shelter in Waterloo, NY. Anyone who cares about the puppy mill issue is invited to attend, meet other individuals and groups, and to hear the guest speakers, including Best Friends Animal Society’s Dr. Frank McMillan. The lineup of speakers and booths is worth the trip to Penn Yann, New York!

Scheduled speakers, exhibits:

-Dr. Frank McMillan, DVM: Best Friends Animal Society
-Rescue Ink: www.rescueink.org
-Sue West, Deputy Secretary of Dog Law Enforcement: PA Department of Agriculture
-Puppies are Biodegradable Art Exhibit: www.puppiesarebiodegradable.com
-Mike and Dana Harder: Adopters of two Puppy Mill Rescue Inc, dogs.

I am so pleased to hear this was a well-attended event. More people need to know the truth about mills. I helped transported five rescued mill Yorkies on Sunday. They were all senior females - the youngest 8 and the oldest 13. It broke my heart to envision the life these five sweet souls had to endure for all those years as "breeding machines" for the greed of someone who could care less. It was obvious they had no vet care or care at all. In spite of the fact that they were dirty and smelled so bad, I gave them the comfort of my arms and lap. At least I now know they are safe and will be loved for the rest of their time here on this earth.

I worked at the event today and it was well attended and (I think) a big success. The guys from Rescue Ink were great and quite a few new people signed up for information about Best Friends. Thanks to Lynne, our team leader, for doing a great job!

I really hope this event is a huge sucess in terms of raising public awareness. I imagine it isn't too much of a reach to speculate that we've been talking to each other about the issue for a very long time. We all agree that mills should go away. I have to believe that once the issue becomes more mainstream, those who didn't know before and who become educated on the subject will join our ranks if for no other reason than to express their outrage.

I'm proud to be an American. I'm a veteran and served my country with honor for many years, some of them far, far from home (and in places where dogs were bred to be consumed). I get goosebumps when I hear the National Anthem. I would like nothing more than to quit my day job and work at a place like the BFAS. But when I think about the mills and about the shelter death rates, I'm ashamed to live in this country. We're better than this, people. If we work together, maybe we really can bring about change.

Beverly Animal Shelter is a wonderful place. Our girls, Thelma and Louise, were transported there from Mississippi through Best Friends. My husband and I traveled to Waterloo to pick up the girls and met a wonderful staff member, Lori, who has been there a long time. I hope this is a very successful event as I am sure it will be. Good Luck!
