Looking for a Few Good Volunteers!

October 16, 2006 : 12:00 AM
Alley Cat Guardians has several interesting programs that are in critical need of additional volunteers. Our organization is hoping to provide increased access to low cost spay/neuter for stray and feral cats. In order to meet the community's needs, we need to grow our volunteer base. If you are interested in volunteering with any of the areas outlined below, please email Nicole at AlleyCatGuardian@aol.com

Thank you for your interest and support of ACG programs!

Alley Cat Guardians

Saturday Spay/Neuter Clinic:
ACG sponsors a high volume, low-cost, Saturday spay/neuter clinic once a month. The clinic requires one volunteer to schedule 70+ spay/neuter appointments from hotline phone calls, a volunteer to transport humane cat traps or extra cat carriers to individuals requesting such services, and 6 volunteers on the clinic day to check in clients, collect spay/neuter fees, or assist cats in the recovery room following surgery (visual inspections, holding small kittens to keep them warm, cleaning cages). The clinic is an exciting environment to work in, knowing that you are directly helping to reduce pet overpopulation.

Petsmart Adoption Counselor:
ACG hosts an adoption event at Petsmart every 3rd week. There are two 4-hour shifts Thursday through Sunday to cover our core hours at the store (10-2/2-6). Adoption Counselors assist customers in selecting and viewing adoptable cats, providing information on proper cat care, educating the public regarding Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR) and our low cost spay/neuter program, interviewing potential adoption families and completing necessary paperwork for approved adoptions.

Volunteers learn the adoption application process and paperwork protocols by shadowing a current ACG Adoption Counselor and practicing interviews with the assistance of a current ACG Adoption Counselor. Adoption Counselor Volunteers are enthusiastic and outgoing individuals who are able to convey the important role ACG plays in the community, speak with a variety of people diplomatically, and feel confident in executing adoptions following training.

Hotline Calls:
Return hotline calls on a regular basis, typically 1-2 times a week. Encourage callers to take an active role in caring for stray cats by getting them sterilized, fostering, taking care of a colony or volunteering at ACG events. Provide callers with information on our low cost clinic.

Feral Cat Colony Caretaker:
Join a feral cat colony caretaker team! Colony caretakers may select how many colonies they'd like to assist with and how many days a week they can cover. Caretakers provide fresh food and water to cats daily and monitor for new cats, sick cats or possibly pregnant cats. Caretakers may also assist in trapping unsterilized cats that are new to the colony or call in a more experienced trapper to help. Colony caretaking requires a minimal amount of time and volunteers can select whatever days/locations work best for them. Colony caretakers are also available to help out with other colonies when a caretaker goes on vacation or is sick. This is an area that is in dire need of additional volunteers.

Special Events:
Alley Cat Guardians hosts several fundraising events annually. These events include garage sales, the Kitty Tea, PetSmart Santa Claws pictures, and Gottschalk's Charity Appreciation Day. Volunteers are always needed to help out in many ways at these events.

Hi: I can do the hotline calls and probably Petsmart volunteers. The only problem is I only need 2 classes to get my BA and right now the classes are Friday 5:30 - 10:00 at Chapman.
I am also in desparate need of a kitten. After 4 years my roommate finally agreed for me to have a kitten. I want one that's no more that 6 weeks old. Cathy Hall 525-9202 at meowcjh@yahoo.com
