The Spay/Neuter Bill Fails
Thanks to Alley Cat Allies' supporters and others, the California Senate voted down AB 1634, a type of mandatory spay/neuter bill.
This bill would have unfairly penalized people who care for stray and feral cats, discouraging the care of those cats and ultimately leading to the killing of more cats in pounds and shelters. The vote in the Senate was 27 to 5 against AB 1634.
Alley Cat Allies supports spay/neuter and legislation that expands access to spay/neuter services. However, we do not support punitive measures, like AB 1634, that could harm caregivers and cats alike.
Although unlikely, it is possible that another bill under consideration in the California Senate could be amended to include similar mandatory spay/neuter provisions. Alley Cat Allies is monitoring the California Senate and will alert you if further action is needed.
