The New Haven Animal Shelter is desperate for adoptions!

By Kelli Banet, Best Friends Network Volunteer

The New Haven Animal Shelter is full, and is in dire need of private adoptions or help from rescue groups. According to Animal Control Officer Stephanie Johnson, the shelter has taken in 160 animals during the past month. They are currently housing rabbits, roosters, and chickens, in addition to dozens of dogs and cats.

The New Haven Animal Shelter does not enforce the seven day policy of many other municipal animal shelters, knowing that it takes time for each animal to find his or her perfect person. They have been working with the public, providing pet food to citizens who want to keep their companions, but who cannot afford to feed them. But with so may foreclosures, strays, evictions, cruelty cases, and owner releases, there is nowhere to house all of the animals.

Please consider adopting from the shelter. Dogs are vaccinated and spayed or neutered before adoption (or you will receive a voucher for a low cost spay or neuter). Cats receive the aforementioned medical treatment and are screened for FELV/FIV! Save a life! Take a ride over to the New Haven Animal Shelter today and adopt a friend.

How you can help:

Check out the shelter's Petfinder page to see some of the friends available for adoption. You can also find information about hours and fees on the page.

Take a look at the Friends of the New Haven Animal Shelter for information about the animals and upcoming adoption events. You can also find information about donating to the shelter.

Forward this article or the shelter's web page to friends, family, and rescue groups that might be able to help save a life.

River does seem to take full advantage of networking opportunities. He wants out of my spare bedroom, and into a home of his own!

Just look at that gorgeous River. I never know where I'm going to see him next and I'm always glad when I do.
