Woodlands Racetrack set to close, leaving dogs looking for homes.
By Mary Rice, Best Friends NetworkAs of the end of the day on August 23rd, the Woodlands racetrack in Kansas City, Kansas will be closed for business. In these tough economic times this means hardship, not only for the employees of the track, but also for the hundreds of greyhounds that race there.
Although there is yet an exact count on the number of greyhounds that will end up in rescue organizations or be put to sleep, the estimates are astounding. What makes the situation delicate is the fact that the racing dogs will end up displacing other dogs at tracks around the country, leaving a reverberation in rescue organizations nationwide.
Local greyhound rescue organizations
Kansas City Retired Greyhounds as Pets (REGAP) and
Pups Without Partners Greyhound Adoption are working together to help the Woodlands ex-racers and are asking the public for assistance.
