The Stanly County Animal Shelter is located in Albemarle, North Carolina, near Charlotte. The strange looking gas chamber pictured is used to kill thousands of dogs and cats each year.
According to animal shelter reporting data, Stanly County killed 3390 dogs and cats in 2005 alone. Approximately 90 percent of animals coming in to the shelter will exit through this odd, tilting metal box on wheels. Does this look humane?
The June 2003 Charlotte Observer article "Death at the Pound," quotes a former Stanly animal control employee saying this about animals euthanized in the box: "After you bring them out, some of them aren't all down. Sometimes we have to put them back in."
