New Book: Best Hikes With Dogs in NC

by Michele King, Best Friends Network

Author Karen Chavez has traveled her home state extensively with her faithful dog Shelby. Karen is specialties editor for the Asheville Citizen-Times newspaper. In addition to publishing articles about dogs and hiking, she has now written the book on the subject.

Mountaineers Books published the book "Best Hikes With Dogs: North Carolina" in October 2007. The inspiring guide includes 51 pet-friendly adventures in the mountains, piedmont, and the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.

Natives and newcomers alike will appreciate the trail-finder guide for exploring North Carolina's lakes, waterfalls, forests, and meadows with their pets. The book also includes proper trail etiquette, tips on wildlife encounters, and first aid.

There is an adventure awaiting you and your pet in North Carolina, no matter what your pet's age and fitness level (or yours) may be. Check out the book, and tell us about your trips!

Thanks so much for this book, Michele! I'm delighted to see Karen's creation and will suggest it to several friends who hike with their dogs in NC.

My vet and her husband (her co-vet) and their dogs will be very happy--they're all great hikers. I expect that the dogs will read it first, as Jeny and Ray stay extremely busy!
