Texas youngster’s drink sales on Sunday, June 22 will benefit Best Friends.
By Jennifer Hayes, Best Friends StaffIt was serendipity when Stacie Pomeroy was surfing the web and came across a promotion by Crayons, a fruit and sport drink company. The first 1,000 children who signed up to join the Crayons Pink Lemonade Brigade were to receive a free lemonade stand and 120 cans of the beverage to sell. Best of all, the entire proceeds are to be donated to the charity of their choice. Because she has been a long-time supporter, Pomeroy selected Best Friends Animal Society.
“The stuff you all do is just amazing; the sanctuary, the programs, and I know that Best Friends took in a lot of the
Michael Vick dogs,” commented Pomeroy. “The literature that you guys have and the magazine are always very positive and upbeat.”

Their family recently adopted two puppies from the
Brazoria County Humane Society, so she described the concept of charity to Tyler, her 3 ½ year-old son, using them as examples. Pomeroy says, “I explained to him where our puppies came from and what the shelter does. I told him that with the lemonade stand we would raise money for animals that were hurt or don’t have a home. He’s real excited about it. He knows where the money’s going to, that it’s not ours, and that we’re doing it for the animals.”
In actuality, the lemonade stand will be also be a tribute to Luke, their former Labrador retriever. Last month, he got out of his pen and was shot by a neighbor. Because he had never escaped previously, he had not been wearing a collar and tags. Mourning the loss of her beloved companion, Pomeroy made a memorial donation in his name to Best Friends and this lemonade stand will be an extension of that gift. She also hopes to make this an opportunity to inform people about the importance of companion animals wearing identification. Although she will never know, she believes if Luke had been wearing a collar, it may have saved his life.
The whole family will be at the Huntsville Kroger grocery store, selling their drinks. In addition to accepting donations, they will also be distributing Best Friends brochures and magazines and will be selling
raffle tickets.
Please be sure to stop in for a nice ice-cold lemonade on a hot Texas day and support Best Friends.
