Book Review by Christy Crabtree

Stefano Zuffi, art historian and author, takes readers on a journey through time as The Cat in Art delves into the history of the feline which is celebrated in various forms of stunning art. Spectacular scenes and depictions of life are the backdrop and subject matter of this incredibly beautiful book.

Zuffi has constructed it with careful thought, grace and beauty. As the book progresses with it’s eclectic collection of pieces, the reader is treated to over 250 magnificent images and is presented with vivid descriptions and interpretations.

The cat is a mystical creature that has been both revered and feared throughout the ages, and artists have used these influences to take us on a journey with the cat that most people have not yet discovered. Featured are some of the world’s most respected artists including Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Goya, Manet, Renoir, Picasso, Warhol along with many others.

Zuffi’s display of these masterpieces show the incredible detail of their work and enhance the cat’s cameo in each piece. From Kirchner’s colorful The Living Room and Gray Cat on a Cushion to da Vinci’s Studies of Cats this highly recommended book peers into history of the feline.

The images contain details of each piece, history and a brief synopsis it illuminates the past to experience the culmination of the feline of today. The talent of the artists flows through the pages and shows the reader multiple sides of the always curious cat. Playful, defiant, sleeping, spirited, free and aloof, the cat can be found in various mosaics, manuscripts, paintings and prints.

For anyone who wants to experience art on par with The Louvre without leaving their home, The Cat in Art delivers an exceptional array of some of the most prolific artists throughout history and the feline’s ability to inspire those talented artists' imagination of generations past to present.

Thanks so much for this review, Christy! You tell us exactly what we want to know about it, and I will definitely try to find the book.

On a lighter note, in addition to Zuffi's The Cat in Art, why not take a look at "A Cat Called Art," a collaborative effort of poetry and art by a Best Friends founder and a Best Friends volunteer.
