Adoptions encouraged as an alternative
Until last weekend, puppies and kittens were among the other “merchandise” offered for sale to 20,000+ visitors at the gargantuan Memphis Flea Market, also known as “The Big One.” But no longer. The flea market’s owner, New York-based American Park & Swap asked the flea market’s Memphis manager on Saturday to hand down notices to vendors that puppies and kittens were no longer allowed for sale.
An article in the
Commercial Appeal stated: “The new policy is based on media reports and discussions with animal welfare groups regarding the ‘alleged’ improper care of animals outside of the flea market.” As part of the policy, the market will advertise pets available for adoption from local animal shelters. Local animal welfare advocates have come out in support of the company’s decision, citing full shelters, and the fact that many puppy mills, or commercial dog breeders sell their puppies at flea markets.
