Not a pretty picture, but you can help
The May 12th episode of Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel exposed a most gruesome retirement plan that faces many Thoroughbreds that “underperform” at the track. The show featured Mountaineer Race Track, a typical racing facility, where horses are trained and kept only as long as they appear to be winners.
No Day Off was a 4 year old that didn’t do well in a recent race. His trainer whacked the horse to get him into the trailer owned by the “meat man,” the affectionate name given to a dealer that pick up the horses from the tracks and transports them to the horse auction. No Day Off was taken to an auction in Ohio, where he was tagged as item #481, and sold to a “killer buyer”. If you watched the rest of the show, you don’t want it relived here, and if you didn’t watch the show, well let’s just say it’s the fodder for a lifetime of nightmares. You don’t need to experience the atrocities first hand to understand why it’s important that we as US citizens voice our opinions on this matter!
Actionable item: Thank HBO & Bryant Gumbel for exposing horse slaughter! This show really exposed the horrors of horses being shipped out of the country for slaughter. But wait! Isn’t horse meat illegal in the US and didn’t this country just shut down the last of the slaughter houses in Texas and Illinois? Sure it did – but this is supply and demand, so now horses are packed into trailers and shipped for days on end, without food or water, to Mexico and Canada where they are slaughtered. Sounds like a real glitch in the system, even Bryant asked after the segment, “aren’t there regulations or laws governing the retirement of these horses?” Oh Bryant, this is the beginning of the enlightenment that starts with such an innocent question! So no, not only are there no regulation for a “retirement plan,” there are also no regulations for the transport and slaughter of horses crossing borders. If you care about animals, you’ve got to speak up, speak loud, and spread the word!
