Best Friends Animal Society

At the Wild Friends Department at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary we have a wildlife rehabilitation program, an educational wildlife program, and a domestic rescue program. The state and federally licensed wildlife rehabilitation program helps get orphaned and injured wildlife healed and back out into the wild. Our state and federally licensed wildlife education program provides lifetime care for wildlife that is unable to return to the wild. We also rescue domestic birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Echo's New House

November 15, 2007 : 1:49 PM
Echo's new donated enclosure!

Echo, our educational red-tailed hawk, recently moved into a brand new enclosure, with a lot more room than her old house.

Unfortunately the photo doesn't do it justice, but it is a very nice space, airy and light with several natural trees and shrubs and interesting natural perches. The total aviary is 12' high, 24' wide and 36' long.

Since this photo was taken we have outfitted the top of the A-frame shelter to be a perch as well, and Echo loves finally being able to be on a perch that is higher than most humans. It gives her a feeling of safety and security that is very evident in her body language. In her old enclosure, which was much shorter, Echo tended to get agitated and twitchy when visitors approached too closely. Now, on her high perch, she sits calmly and returns the visitors' gazes with peaceful interest and curiosity.

We are very grateful to see our beautiful girl so happy, and want to thank our generous donors for giving us the aviary, and the Best Friends Maintenance Department for erecting it. Thank you!

Echo loves having visitors, so any time you're in the area, please drop by and take our wildlife tour to see her and all our other educational wildlife.

This really is a great enclosure! I agree, the photo does not do it justice. I was amazed to see the positive difference in Echo's demeanor after she moved into her new enclosure. She was always so skittish in her smaller enclosure - now she seems so much more confident. Congratulations on the new digs!
