Wild Friends at Best Friends
A New Mink
April 23, 2008 : 2:56 PM
The Wild Friends department at Best Friends has a new domestic mink! An energetic, playful girl, Pixie is approximately one year old, and ready for adventure. She has almost finished her quarantine period and she has been spayed, so all she needs now are her rabies and distemper vaccines and she will be free to join our other minks, Snitch and Raissa.
This is a great ending for this sweet girl, who apparently escaped from a fur farm and then ended up in an animal shelter for six months. Luckily for Pixie, the Nevada Humane Society knew about Best Friends' domestic mink rescue program and called us to see if we could take her. Of course we agreed, and soon Pixie was on her way.
During her time at the animal shelter, and for the first few days here, Pixie was fearful and defensive. That's not surprising, considering that Pixie appears to have escaped from a fur farm. Fur farms are horrible places, and the minks are not raised or executed in even remotely humane conditions, so it's no surprise that Pixie didn't trust humans. Now that she's been with us for awhile, and has received nothing but good treatment, toys, tasty food and a swimming pool, Pixie is a cheerful girl. She is slowly learning to trust us, and will occasionally allow us to scratch her belly. Soon she will be in an outdoor enclosure with two other minks to keep her company, and she will be even happier!
We are very grateful to have the chance to help even one mink lead a happier life after escaping from the horrors of a fur farm, and we are thrilled to be able to provide Pixie with a happy home for as long as she lives. Thanks to all our Best Friends members - you have made this rescue possible for Pixie!
