West Virginia Puppy Mills

A Room With No View

August 25, 2008 : 7:55 PM
Rescuer in West Virginia puppy mill bust blogs about the experience.

Kelli Orhtman is the puppy mill campaign manager for Best Friends. She works tirelessly for the dogs caught in the pet trade. The situation in West Virginia was heating up and heading towards a boil. She and a team from Best Friends were headed to the site as soon as the green light was given, to join the other organizations on the ground and help save as many dogs as possible!

But just what would they encounter? Kelli is sharing her first hand experience with us, for those of us that wish we could do something, she gives us an inside glimpse into what it takes to save over a thousand dogs!

Click here to get the inside scoop on what it takes to close a puppy mill.

My gosh. Reading about this rescue operation, to include Kelli O's blog, took my breath away. As I read all of the comments below, I found myself nodding my head. We can stop this. I genuinely believe that educating the public about this industry is key; so very many people don't know about the industry and once you tell them they wonder how in the world it's legal.

I've dealt with Kelli O quite a bit in developing my humane education videos and while I always respected her before, this makes me respect her and all those involved in this operation even more.

When the dust settles, I'd like to know if there's a way us folks active in the network can get involved in future operations like this near where we live. I'm happy to scoop poop just to be involved in some small way with saving these lives. I understand there are rapid response requirements for natural disasters but don't know if helping with closing a mill operation means volunteers have to meet those same educational requirements.

Awareness leads to education leads to action leads to change.

I saw a "miller" speaking on a tv program and bragging about how he doesn't report income or pay taxes on the puppies he sells. Maybe the way to get them out of business is to do a "Capone" and have them audited by the income tax folks.

There is only one way to end the atrocities of puppy mills---make it unprofitable..As long as there is $ to be made, the Hunte Co--Petlands,individual pet stores and the AKC will continue to support puppy mills. Throughout this country, there are hundred of Humane Societies, rescue groups etc. who have the power to make a difference, but lack co-ordination and communication. I hope before I go to the bridge, that someone steps up and leads us.

These puppy mills are in states like West Virginia because there are few to no laws to protect the dogs there.

Breeders don't have to get licensed, or inspected. Nothing.

So abusing dogs in mills is legal in states like WV until there are more laws and regulations put in place.

But the puppy mill lobbying groups (including the AKC because they make a lot of money on puppy mill registrations) oppose laws.

When people contact their legislators and demand laws and rules, then things will really change for the dogs. There are too many mills that haven't been busted and never will till the laws change.

You people are my heroes.

And I pray for the day that those who run these mills get prosecuted for one felony count of animal cruelty per animal found on the premises. Plea bargains won't be needed, either - the evidence is there for all to see.

Thanks so much for all you do.
